Synthetic Genes
high quality at low costs
What do we offer?
febit synbio gmbh is currently offering the services and applications described below to selected early access customers based on individual project assignments. Our specialists will be happy to assess your individual needs and to determine if we can provide you an overall project design and an experimental setup at this pre-launch stage.
The main reason for this approach is based on febits determination to establish a strong biosecurity backbone for all operations within the market segment of synthetic genes first.
After this task is achieved febit will launch its synbio product line as a broad service.
febit products and services:
- synthetic genes: cDNA, Promotors, RNAi-constructs, etc.
- gene-optimization (with respect to codon usage, mRNA secondary structure, splicing motives, reverse ORFs, etc.)
- biobricks / iGem parts
future expansion of product and service portfolio:
- large synthetic genes and genecluster (>10 kpb)
Key benefits
- fast and extremely cost efficient oligonucleotide synthesis, gene synthesis, gene-clusters, etc. of any gene with sequence information available
- ideal for rare genes and rare species or organisms that are hard to access as well as predicted or in silico designed genes
- sequence optimization with respect to codon usage and the expression systems of choice
- fast and efficient fine-tuning of experimental design, proof of principle and direct feedback of results into the next iteration step e.g. in new oligo synthesis
- unique ability to integrate synthetic biology experiments with tailor made Geniom Biochips for expression profiling and genome analysis.
- Another side of genomics: Synthetic biology as a mean for the exploitation of whole-genome sequence information

febit synbio has pledged itself to ensure the biosecurity and biosafety of its products. In-house this goal is achieved by applying rigid security standards and the appropriate regulatory requirements within all processes covering gene synthesis. As part of this system:
- customers are required to comply with our comprehensive accreditation process
- sequences are scanned in detail for potential threats
In addition, febit synbio took a mayor role in founding the Industry Association of Synthetic Biology (IASB) within which the company holds the chairmanship. The association is a collaboration between several renowned industry partners towards standardized procedures for handling and production of synthetic genes.
Some of the activities include software development for constant screening of potential virulence factors, the main development is currently spearheaded by Entelechon together with university partners.
Additionally the IASB is engaged in talks with the International Consortium for Polynucleotide Synthesis (ICPS) - another organization comprised of companies addressing the issues of biosecurity - and plans to work closely with government institutions.
febit holds key patents for microfluidic-biochip derived oligos in synthetic biology and is constantly putting substantial R&D effort in the further development and improvement of the technology and our patent portfolio.
Patent No. 6,586,211 claims the exclusive use of microarrays for synthetic gene production.
In 2007 febit served a patent infringement lawsuit against Codon Devices in order to defend its issued U.S. Patent No. 6,586,211.
We also actively seek strategic licensing opportunities and alliances with academic institutions and other companies.
Synthetic biology using febit’s Geniom technology platform
De novo DNA-synthesis offers enormous potential and new possibilities with regard to the production of new genes, gene clusters or even whole genomes. Customized production of synthetic DNA provides immediate access to any sequence needed and supports a wide range of possible applications, including engineered molecular biology products, synthetic genes, novel pharmacons and bio-engineered therapeutics.
Highly parallel synthesis of oligomers on biochips reduces the expenses to a fraction of today’s prices, enabling the cost-effective synthesis of genes. febit’s patented technologies will provide access to synthetic DNA with lengths up to several 10.000 bp.
Crucial requirement for synthetic biology is a quick and inexpensive access to a huge number of oligonucleotides, serving as building blocks for the production of genetic sequences. With array-derived oligomers that enable the synthesis of genetic sequences at reasonable costs, the Geniom Technology circumvents this bottleneck. Using febit’s patented light directed DNA synthesis, the Geniom Platform is capable of flexibly synthesizing almost 500.000 different oligonucleotides per day. Thus, it represents an effective way to produce the starting material needed for constructive biology.
Workflow of gene synthesis
DNA oligonucleotides for gene synthesis are designed in silico, assuring perfect assembly by optimization of overlapping oligonucleotide sequences. Subsequently they are turned into double stranded DNA either by enzymatic linkage using ligases or by gradual elongation with polymerases.
